Myths, Legends and Folklore of China
How Buddha offered Heaven to Monkey if Monkey was powerful enough to escape from his palm, but Buddha's command of space and time was such that his palm encompassed the Universe, and Monkey was trapped within Buddha's magical mountain; how the smiling god of longevity, Shou-lao, records the time of a person's natural death as soon as that person is born; how Monkey was released from his mountain prison, to accompany the pilgrim Thang Seng and his assistant Pig on their quest to the Western Paradise, to bring back the original teachings of Buddha; the epic of Hsi Yu Chi, the Journey to the Western Paradise, a real event but made fantastic in the tale of how Monkey and Pig redeemed themselves by assisting their holy master in the quest; how ageing, renegade foxes could avoid death by transforming themselves into attractive men and women, so as to seduce young people and drain them of their life-force; how "swords", made from coins strung together, protected babies from thou-tzu-kuei, the embittered ghosts of childless women (the smoke from burning slippers provided similar protection); and how an unburied corpse, with the legs traditionally bound together, may become a chiang-shih, a "hopping ghost", blind but vampiric and with powers that may include flight, long and prehensile eyebrows, powerful breath and the ability to change its appearance, are among the myths, legends and folktales of China.
