    Yarkand jerboas Euchoreutes naso, kangaroo-like rodents with proportionally enormous ears, living and hibernating in communal burrows on the steppes of northwestern China; Eastern black crested gibbons Nomascus nasutus, critically edangered anthropoids in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; endangered tigers Panthera tigris, including a few Bengal tigers in southern Tibet, Amur tigers (Siberian tigers) near the border with Russia, Indonesian tigers in Yunnan and South China tigers reintroduced from a "rewilding" program in South Africa; wolves Canis lupus, including a Tibetan race, still found in the sparsely populated regions of Tibet and northwestern China; Chinese alligators Alligator sinensis, once almost extinct in the wild but saved by captive breeding and returned to its (restored) natural habitat; red foxes Vulpes vulpes, shared with lands as distant as Britain and the USA but particularly crafty in Chinese folklore; takins Budorcas taxicolor, strange looking wild oxen, roaming the rhododendron and bamboo clad hills and mountains of western China; Eastern hoolock gibbons Hoolock leuconedys in the tropical forests of Yunnan near Myanmar (Burma); various species of macaque including the rhesus monkey macaca mulatta; and snow leopards Uncia uncia in the wild mountains of Tibet and nortwestern China, where they prey on animals such as argalis and marmots, are some of the wild creatures of this country.
