Myths, Legends and Folklore of China
How suicides became wandering and often malevolent ghosts (kuei), at least until the time of their natural death, as recorded by the deity Shou-lao, had been reached; how the souls of people eaten by tigers were enslaved by the big cats until until their ghosts (kuei) had lured someone else to a similar fate; how there are five kinds of lung (dragon), specifically the ethereal dragons of the rain and wind, the earthly dragons that created rivers and lakes, the five-clawed imperial dragons (most dragons are depicted with four claws), heavenly guardian dragons and dragons that protect hidden treasures; how Monkey was pacified by being given responsibility for the Heavenly Peach Orchard of Immortality but ate the peaches himself and became immortal; how the world was created by the death of Hun-Tun (chaos), who had no eyes, ears, nostrils or mouth and died when his friends Shu, ruler of the South and Hu, ruler of the North, cut seven holes, over seven days, so that Hun-Tan could see, hear, breathe and eat; the epic of Hsi Yu Chi, the Journey to the Western Paradise, a real event but made fantastic in the tale of how Monkey and Pig redeemed themselves by assisting their holy master in the quest; and how, after causing trouble in heaven, Monkey escaped to Mount Hua-Kuo, where he repulsed Heaven's armies, proclaiming himself to be both a saint and ruler of Heaven, are among the myths, legends and folktales of China.
