Rare black crested gibbons Nomascus concolor in the tropical jungles of southwestern Yunnan; Yarkand jerboas Euchoreutes naso, kangaroo-like rodents with proportionally enormous ears, living and hibernating in communal burrows on the steppes of northwestern China; gaurs Bos gaurus, largest of the wild oxen, in the tropical forests of Yunnan; various species of macaque including the rhesus monkey macaca mulatta; arboreal clouded leopards Neofelis nebulosa, named for their marbled fur, just surviving in the forest remnants of southern China; wolves Canis lupus, including a Tibetan race, still found in the sparsely populated regions of Tibet and northwestern China; takins Budorcas taxicolor, strange looking wild oxen, roaming the rhododendron and bamboo clad hills and mountains of western China; several races of small muntjak deer Muntiacus muntjak, among which females are without antlers and males have small but dangerous tusks; iconic giant pandas Ailuropoda melanoleuca, not closely related to the true or "red" pandas and surviving, with help, in the bamboo forests of Szechwan; and Himalayan tahrs Hemitragus jemlahicus, beardless wild goats on the wooded slopes of that range, are some of the wild creatures of this country.
