Myths, Legends and Folklore of China
How Monkey was pacified by being given responsibility for the Heavenly Peach Orchard of Immortality but ate the peaches himself and became immortal; how, during the quest to the Western Paradise, the Buddhist pilgrim Thang Seng disciplined Monkey by means of a magical, squeezing helmet; how "swords", made from coins strung together, protected babies from thou-tzu-kuei, the embittered ghosts of childless women (the smoke from burning slippers provided similar protection); how Monkey escaped from Hell (where he was being punished for his megalomania) but not before deleting the names of all monkeys from the Book of Judgments; how the Lord of Heaven made Monkey Master of Heaven's Stables to keep him out of trouble but Monkey wrought havoc when he realised the reason for his appointment; how each earthly house had both human and spiritual dwellers, including a kitchen spirit that was bribed with sweets so that he would not give, each new year, an unfavourable report to the Emperor of Heaven; and how the souls of people eaten by tigers were enslaved by the big cats until until their ghosts (kuei) had lured someone else to a similar fate, are among the myths, legends and folktales of China.
