  • Myths, Legends and Folklore of China

How, after causing trouble in heaven, Monkey escaped to Mount Hua-Kuo, where he repulsed Heaven's armies, proclaiming himself to be both a saint and ruler of Heaven; how Monkey (Sun Hou-Tzu) was hatched from an egg on the eastern side of the Pacific (so is technically a New World monkey); how suicides became wandering and often malevolent ghosts (kuei), at least until the time of their natural death, as recorded by the deity Shou-lao, had been reached; the devastation caused by the horned, bodiless rain dragon, Thaoh-thieh, that lost its body as a punishment for eating people and, having no stomach, is insatiable; how Monkey learned great magic from a Taoist Immortal and used his skills to rule all of the monkeys in the world; how "swords", made from coins strung together, protected babies from thou-tzu-kuei, the embittered ghosts of childless women (the smoke from burning slippers provided similar protection); and how the revolting Monkey was eventually captured, and sentenced to death, by Jade Yu-Ti, the Emperor of Heaven, who gave him over to the Taoist master Lao Chun, to be dissolved in the alchemical furnace but even that could not harm the indestructible Monkey, are among the myths, legends and folktales of China. (We do not promote superstition and they are presented for your interest only.)

We wish you an enjoyable stay at your chosen Haimen hotel. The famous and/or historic hotels of the world are major destinations in their own right. The Shangri-La Hotel in Lhasa, the Grand Hyatt Macau, the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, the Grand Coloane Beach Resort in Macau, the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, the Campo Bahia Resort in Bahia, Brazil and the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. are among the historic, famous and/or luxurious of the international hotels.
