Some Fauna of China
Swollen-necked goitred gazelles gazella subgutturosa, among which only rams have horns, surviving on the steppes of the west; Eurasian elk (moose) Alces alces, huge deer among which the males have enormously broad antlers, in the forests bordering Russia; Tibetan wild asses, also called kiangs Equus kiang, roaming the open spaces of the Tibetan plateau, where their coats grow long during the winter; Chinese alligators Alligator sinensis, once almost extinct in the wild but saved by captive breeding and returned to its (restored) natural habitat; Himalayan tahrs Hemitragus jemlahicus, beardless wild goats on the wooded slopes of that range; Asiatic elephants Elephas maximus in the diminished forests of Yunnan, where they survive because they are fed by humans (it is better than no elephants at all); Hainan black-crested gibbons Nomascus hainanus, anthropoid apes found only in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve on the island of Hainan; arboreal clouded leopards Neofelis nebulosa, named for their marbled fur, just surviving in the forest remnants of southern China; raccoon dogs Nyctereutes procyonoides, mostly nocturnal predators, hunting in small packs and able to climb trees; and red foxes Vulpes vulpes, shared with lands as distant as Britain and the USA but particularly crafty in Chinese folklore, are some of the wild creatures of this country.
