Asiatic elephants Elephas maximus in the diminished forests of Yunnan, where they survive because they are fed by humans (it is better than no elephants at all); omnivorous Siberian chipmunks Eutamias sibiricus, in appearance superficially similar to their more famous American cousins and sharing the habit of carrying food in cheek pouches; Yarkand jerboas Euchoreutes naso, kangaroo-like rodents with proportionally enormous ears, living and hibernating in communal burrows on the steppes of northwestern China; critically endangered white-headed langurs Trachypithecus poliocephalus, a species of lutung found in Guangxi; rare François' langurs Trachypithecus francoisi, actually lutungs and sometimes called Francois' leaf monkeys, inhabiting the woodlands of southwestern China; rare black crested gibbons Nomascus concolor in the tropical jungles of southwestern Yunnan; Malayan sun bears Helarctos malayanus, smallest of the bears, in the tropical forests of Yunnan province; red foxes Vulpes vulpes, shared with lands as distant as Britain and the USA but particularly crafty in Chinese folklore; reputedly ferocious wolverines Gulo gulo, also called gluttons, in the forests bordering russia; and iconic giant pandas Ailuropoda melanoleuca, not closely related to the true or "red" pandas and surviving, with help, in the bamboo forests of Szechwan, are some of the wild creatures of this country.
