Myths, Legends and Folklore of China
How the war god Kuan Ti (Guanti) was once an heroic outlaw called Kuan Chung who, after his capture and execution, was in stages promoted from duke to prince and, eventually, deified; how yin and yang were separated from the egg of chaos by the birth of Phu-hu who, while the universe expanded, filled the space between the earth (yin) and the sky (yang) until he died and his flesh became soil, his tears rivers and his breath wind; how a farmer befriended a fox that took the form of an old man who, magically, took the farmer to a restaurant far away, to be entertained in grand style, only for the farmer to eventually realise that respectable people do not befriend foxes, upon which the fox and his vulpine friends vanished, leaving the farmer far from home and without money; how, after causing trouble in heaven, Monkey escaped to Mount Hua-Kuo, where he repulsed Heaven's armies, proclaiming himself to be both a saint and ruler of Heaven; the devastation caused by the horned, bodiless rain dragon, Thaoh-thieh, that lost its body as a punishment for eating people and, having no stomach, is insatiable; how Monkey was pacified by being given responsibility for the Heavenly Peach Orchard of Immortality but ate the peaches himself and became immortal; and how Monkey became drunk while conquering the world, enabling his heavenly foes to send him to Hell, are among the myths, legends and folktales of China.
