Malayan sun bears Helarctos malayanus, smallest of the bears, in the tropical forests of Yunnan province; red foxes Vulpes vulpes, shared with lands as distant as Britain and the USA but particularly crafty in Chinese folklore; wolves Canis lupus, including a Tibetan race, still found in the sparsely populated regions of Tibet and northwestern China; Przewalski's horse (Mongolian wild horse) Equus przewalski, similar to those represented in prehistoric French cave paintings and reintroduced to the steppes of northwestern China from captive European populations such as the one at Woburn Abbey; Northern white-cheeked gibbons Nomascus leucogenys in the Mengyang Nature Reserve of Yunnan; a number of species of giant fruit bat, including the Indian flying fox Pteropus giganteus with wingspans up to a staggering five feet, in the tropical forests of southwestern China; wild, two-humped Bactrian camels Camelus bactrianus, rare but surviving in the Gobi desert; Yarkand jerboas Euchoreutes naso, kangaroo-like rodents with proportionally enormous ears, living and hibernating in communal burrows on the steppes of northwestern China; Chinese alligators Alligator sinensis, once almost extinct in the wild but saved by captive breeding and returned to its (restored) natural habitat; and various species of macaque including the rhesus monkey macaca mulatta, are some of the wild creatures of this country.
