Myths, Legends and Folklore of China

How Monkey was pacified by being given responsibility for the Heavenly Peach Orchard of Immortality but ate the peaches himself and became immortal; how Kuan Yin (Guanyin), who could have achieved nirvana much sooner, postponed her total enlightenment so that she could provide earthly help to those in need; how Monkey (Sun Hou-Tzu) was hatched from an egg on the eastern side of the Pacific (so is technically a New World monkey); how the revolting Monkey was eventually captured, and sentenced to death, by Jade Yu-Ti, the Emperor of Heaven, who gave him over to the Taoist master Lao Chun, to be dissolved in the alchemical furnace but even that could not harm the indestructible Monkey; how Monkey escaped from Hell (where he was being punished for his megalomania) but not before deleting the names of all monkeys from the Book of Judgments; how, after causing trouble in heaven, Monkey escaped to Mount Hua-Kuo, where he repulsed Heaven's armies, proclaiming himself to be both a saint and ruler of Heaven; and how the world was created by the death of Hun-Tun (chaos), who had no eyes, ears, nostrils or mouth and died when his friends Shu, ruler of the South and Hu, ruler of the North, cut seven holes, over seven days, so that Hun-Tan could see, hear, breathe and eat, are among the myths, legends and folktales of China. (We do not promote superstition and they are presented for your interest only.)
